a tree? you mean bush right? dont know how you would stop that except to cut the fruit bearing branches long before the vines get above your head. good luck. make some jam or preserves for me, k? ::)

When I see a blackberry tree, I’ll let you know….
Just cut it down when the leaves fall (so you can see the thorns and wear protective gloves that still don’t stop all the pricks) off in the winter and rip it all the way out, including the roots. Plant another scrub there that doesn’t produce berries. Otherwise you’ll be cutting the blackberry bush ever year, till doomsday. Their resilient that way. Plus they like to spread. They do taste good though.
To Brandon: Yeah burning them does work. Though the questioner stated that they were on his porch so that implies a close proximity of the blackberry bush to the house. So yeah – burning works but in this case it could work a little too well and take the house with it… Let’s all just put the matches away shall we? It’s always fun and burning bushes until someone burns their house down…LOL
Its usualy a loosing battle with blackberries. I just accept them and take advantage of the fruit, Its one of my favorites. MMM cobbler…
As Mercedes said, if you are going to try to cut them down, do it in the winter, Its much less dramatic..
You should pour Clorox on it.
Either that or set it on fire.
sometimes digging it up works to.
